The Private Mixing Course Level II is a 12 week intensive course designed to guide you through each step in the mixing process. Level II focusses on streamlining the efficiency of your mixing process by demonstrating workflows that accommodate the needs of specific styles of music.
This course was originally created with 10 private lessons included in the program. However, the information provided stands on its own as with every other mixing course on the site. Any references to 'mix submissions' should be ignored in this "Replay Edition".
The fundamental purpose of this course is to teach you how to establish an efficient workflow for the first 80% of a mix. The “first 80% of a mix” is the foundation from which all your creative work will built upon. The more efficient you become in this stage, the more energy will be left for the creative work that will make a “mix” into a “record”.
This class will weigh the benefits and weaknesses of different processing workflows. It is important to establish a processing chain workflow that you are comfortable with and can work most efficiently with.
In order to establish an efficient workflow, you will need to incorporate good mixing habits and be able to interchange them as the mix deems necessary. This class will teach you how to replace your bad mixing habits with workflows that increase your efficiency and keep you from entering a mixing death spiral.
This class will feature the 80% Principle on a Hip Hop Mix using a Digital Only processing workflow with No Soloing in the mix. The primary purpose is to show how quickly a mix can be put together without directing individual sounds. Because this is all programmed music, notice that the functional compression is prior to EQ.
This class will focus on creative enhancements that are specific to Hip Hop music.
This class will fine tune the processing and effects work from part 2 and begins the process of detailing and finishing the mix.
An aggressive Rock Mix is a perfect model for Channel Strip processing that is feeding into compression. Notice that the EQ is prior to the Functional Compression stage and all of this will be feeding into a mix bus or mix stem compression. Selecting the best compressor to mix into is an important decision that will shape the tonality of the entire mix as you build it. Choose wisely!
