Immersive Mixing Course
Level I

The Immersive Mixing Course Level I is designed to teach you how to create immersive sounding mixes in stereo speakers and headphones. The techniques in this course are not reliant on binaural and immersive technologies like Dolby Atmos which will be covered in levels II & III.

COURSE OUTLINE

Class 1: Surround and Immersive Technologies

This class provides historical context of the evolution of surround and immersive technologies and how those principles can be integrated into a simple stereo workflow.

  1. Brief History of Surround Sound (Dolby, DTS)
  2. Immersive Technologies (Atmos, RA360, Ambisonics)
  3. The Binauralization of Sound
  4. DAW Integration
  5. Integrating Immersive Principles using Stereo processing

Class 2: Stereo Tools for Immersive Sound

This class is dedicated to introducing the compliment of tools that will be used to create immersive sounding mixes.

  1. Immersive Sound Field Mapping
  2. Stereo Imaging Processors
  3. Immersive Imaging Processors
  4. Sound Field Localization Processors
  5. Upmixing and Downmixing Explained

Class 3: Creating an Immersive Sound Field in Stereo

The practical application of techniques to create immersive sound characteristics requires a deeper understanding of the sound field itself and how to place instruments and effects into those spaces.

  1. Early Reflection Container System
  2. Creating Sound Field Depth
  3. Creating Sound Field Width
  4. Creating Sound Field Height
  5. Immersive Routing and Signal Flow Considerations
  6. Stereo Panning Considerations for Source Audio

Class 4: Immersive Preparations: Equalization

Creating an immersive sound requires that the elements within that sound field are defined in such a way that the sense of space is clearly recognizable. The class will cover the EQ techniques and principles necessary to create those effects.

  1. Focusing Frequencies in the Sound Field
  2. HPF & LPF Techniques
  3. Resonant Shelf Techniques
  4. 1 & 2 point Equalization Techniques
  5. Vintage EQs For Focus and Character

Class 5: Immersive Preparations: Compression

Controlling dynamic movement within the sound field is a powerful way to expand the sense of an immersive space. The class will cover the compression techniques and principles necessary to acheive those effects.

  1. Localization Control Concepts
  2. Functional Compression Techniques
  3. Parallel Compression Techniques
  4. Vintage Compression Techniques
  5. Limiting and Clipper Techniques

Class 6: Imager Processing for Dry Sounds

Although the majority of immersive sound field processing is applied to effects, there are many times where it is preferred to have the processing on the audio source. This class will teach you how to achieve immersive effects while maintaining mono compatibility.

  1. Imagers and Mono Compatibility
  2. Width and Spread Techniques
  3. Depth and Space Techniques
  4. Panning & Motion Techniques
  5. Modulation Processors

Class 7: Immersive Early Reflection Techniques

Early Reflections are the easiest and most transparent way of creating an immersive sound field. This class teaches you how to create and utilize these immersive ER spaces for placing sounds and effects in specific locations

  1. Establishing Immersive ER Spaces
  2. Placing Sounds in an Immersive ER Space
  3. Placing Reverb in an Immersive ER Space
  4. Full Mix Immersive ER Space
  5. Balancing ER Effects In the Mix

Class 8: Immersive Reverb Techniques

Early Reflections define the immersive sound field and reverb is what fills that space. This class will teach you how manage different reverb types to add body and texture to the immersive sound field.

  1. Enhanced Stereo Reverb
  2. Surround Reverb
  3. Immersive Reverb
  4. Combining Reverb and ER Spaces
  5. Balancing Effects and ER in the Mix

Class 9: Immersive Modulation Effects

Modulation effects are an amazing cheat code for creating 3D effects on dry sounds without losing mono compatibility. It is also a great tool for adding texture to reverb and early reflections.

  1. Immersive Modulation Concepts and Application
  2. Immersive Chorus, Phase and Flange Effects
  3. Immersive Tremolo and Vibrato Effects
  4. Immersive Pan and Movement Effects
  5. Immersive Filter and Distortion Effects

Class 10: Immersive Enhancements

This class will focus on adding clarity, detail and texture to the immersive sound field. These techniques are an incredibly powerful way to bring the immersive sound field to life.

  1. Creating Clarity and Focus With Effects
  2. Compressing Immersive Effects
  3. Equalizing Immersive Effects
  4. Saturating Immersive Effects
  5. Balancing Enhancement Processing

Class 11: Immersive Mix Bus Processing

Mix Bus Processing is the final opportunity to detail the mix . Here, using mid-side processing techniques and careful imaging adjustments can bring the immersive elements of the mix into final focus.

  1. Parallel Processing Enhancements
  2. Mix Bus Imagers
  3. Mix Bus Depth Field Enhancements
  4. Immersive Compression Techniques
  5. Immersive Equalization Techniques

Class 12: Binaural Considerations (Atmos)

This Class will discuss Atmos integration for headphone specific mixes. This will be the primary subject matter of the Immersive Mixing Course Level II.

  1. Dolby Atmos for Headphones
  2. Atmos Monitoring
  3. Atmos Processing
  4. Atmos Rendering Processor
  5. Atmos Mastering
